Melbourne Metro Rail Project

Completion Date

The Melbourne Metro Rail Project is a new twin 9km rail tunnel between South Kensington station (north west of the Melbourne City Centre) and South Yarra (in the south east).  The project includes five new underground stations and will increase overall network capacity and enable the transformation of the rail network from a commuter-style suburban rail system to a metro-style rapid transit system.

The Victorian Government has established the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA) to oversee the delviery of the project and MMRA have appointed a joint venture of Aurecon Jacobs and Mott MacDonald (AJM JV) as project designers.

ActivateRail is supporting the design JV through the provision of various project services including:

  • Project Rail Interface Management, liaising between the project and the rail authorities to ensure the project progresses safely amongst the needs of the operating rail lines
  • Rail Occupation Planning and Coordination
  • Rail Safety and Site Supervision Resources
  • Various other adhoc project and site services as required

This project recently celebrated a major milestone of 1 Million Person Hours on the project without a single Lost Time Injury and ActivateRail has been recognised as a major contributor to this success. This has been achieved with field works including extensive field survey, numerous geotechnical boreholes, numbered in the thousands in brownfield urban and rail environments, structural condition and impact assessments and many more.
